Manufacturing Processes:
1. Plastic Injection Mold Tooling: 10+ years. 2 plate, 3 plate, Over mold/2/3 shot molds (vertical and horizontal). Tool thermal conditioning, resin drying, tool action (slide and lifters). Sprue/gate/runner/vent design. Gas injection molding. Knowing the differences in tooling for different resins, and finished results. (i.e. machine parameter set up, structural, light pipes, large and small parts, additives such as carbon, glass in both long/med chain and nodule, Teflon, noble metals, micro molding aka “babyplast”).
2. Sheet metal fabrication: 15+ years. Knowing the process capability and the effects on your Tolerancing and design of soft tooling, stage die tooling, progressive hard stage tooling. Turret punch press, water jet, laser jet cutting, brake press, rolling, form tools for process specific features.
3. Surface Treatment: Plating, passivation, anodizing, chem-film, polish, ball peen, texturing, etc. Spent many months in plating facilities when at Apple working on plating technology for surface coatings of metals and plastics. Painting, coatings, pad print, silkscreen, process uses/limitations. IML/IMD (in mold labeling/decoration).
4. PCBA Manufacturing: 5+ years working on tooling/fixturing for process quality tooling for PCBA fabrication. “bed of nails” testers, thermal chambers (burn in, halt/hass), board level functional/flash testing, automation tooling for high volume board test and assembly.
5. MIM/Powder metal: 4+ years working with MIM part design, tooling, and process capability. Worked with vendors in US, Taiwan, mainland China on differences in processes based upon equipment capability, recycling, and cost. Use of Base BASF materials to custom mixed materials for magnetic stainless steels.
6. Thixo-molding: 5+ years in thixo-molding process part design, tooling, part limitations for process, where best used and why.
7. Plastic part bonding/joining/welding.
Material Sciences:
1. Plastic Resin: Extensive knowledge in multiple resins, resin composites, additives. Have IDES account for resign selection search. Worked closely with DSM resin manufacturer while at Apple to develop the “green” resins (specifically for Nylons/PETs/PPs) for consumer electronics.
2. Non-Ferrous metals: Aluminums (1000,/3000/5000/6000 series grade, H32 sheet), Zinc, Mg.
3. Steels & high performance Alloys: Caron/Low Alloy Steels for sheet, plate, billet, tool steel, stainless steels. Titanium, columbium steel, Hastelloy, Inconel
Design Expertise:
1. Medical Device Design: Diagnostics Equipment Packaging, Surgical Ablation device. Integrated custom peristaltic pump, electronics, Zigbee, cooling, touch screen display. Portable Hemodialysis Machine.
2. Electronic Sheet Metal Enclosure Packaging. i.e. Computing & storage (rack and panel) chassis (JBODs/servers). HDD drive frames, SBB Chassis. Set top box design, Casino Gaming Enclosures.
3. Designing for EMI up to 48Ghz emission devices. Knowing the characteristics of frequency emissions in enclosures, hole sizing, edge elimination, EMI gasket materials. Waveguide shapes/routing/piping. Hermetic sealing for EMI.
